Yah, there were a bunch of good things added to Flash 8, many of which
would be of great use for a framework such as OpenLaszlo. I'm sure many of
you have already heard of what's new, but here's a small sample of features
that I think are really useful for those who haven't been up on Flash 8.

* Improved garbage collection, as Cortlandt mentions

* The Bitmap object. This can be used for compositing, effects, and
off-screen rendering. It comes with a 2d matrix class for performing matrix
calculations. A 3d matrix would have been nice, but oh well.

* Filters and blending modes (I have a simple example of them being applied
to dynamically loaded png files at http://www.nathanderksen.com/blog/?p=16
).

* Bitmap cacheing. Movie clips whose contents are static can be rendered
just once to cache as a bitmap, and from that point on the movie clip no
longer needs to go through the vector to bitmap conversion routine. The
speed improvement is pretty major for any sort of animation using many
static-content movie clips.

* Saffron, the new text rendering engine. Offers programmatic control over,
kerning, leading, anti-aliasing, weight, etc.

I know it will be a while before OpenLaszlo will be able to take advantage
of Flash 8 features, but there is something to be said for having these
kinds of features native to the player.
